Communal Strife

A careful, factual page on conflict and displacement, and how personal accounts are handled.

Arakan’s history includes periods of violence and tension, and for many families the memory is painful. This page does not assign blame. It states plainly what is widely documented and sets out how we handle personal accounts.

What is documented

During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, conflict and discrimination affecting communities in Arakan, today’s Rakhine State, led to repeated displacement. Researchers, journalists and United Nations agencies have documented large movements of people into Bangladesh in 1978, in 1991–92 and from 2017.

How we handle accounts

  • Personal accounts are recorded with the consent of the person speaking.
  • We do not name living people without their agreement.
  • We do not publish unverified accusations.
  • We keep memory and documented fact clearly apart, and cite sources where we can.

We encourage readers to consult independent sources, listed in the Bibliography.
